Project on Haleeb Milk Essay Example for Free
Project on Haleeb Milk Essay Dairy Queen Milk is a product of Haleeb Foods. Haleeb Foods is a largest company in Pakistanââ¬â¢s dairy industry. Haleeb Foods is one of the organization competing in the UHT Milk industry. There is a big room for development in dairy industry in Pakistan. UHT milk although costly but people know about the milk importance and its quality. Now, there are many products are available in the market regarding UHT milk but Haleeb found that there is a gap between upper class and lower class, so, Haleeb decided to introduce lower price milk with best quality and UHT treated milk for those whom can not afford high price milk. Dairy Queen is Haleeb another standardized and homogenized pure UHT Milk with 3. 5% fat and 8. 9% solid non fats. At an affordable price it has won the hearts of consumers everywhere. It is available in 6-layered Tetra Pak Fino Packaging, introduced for the first time in Pakistan and has 2 months shelf life. Government of Pakistan is now focusing on dairy industry. RD department of Haleeb Foods is continuous watching the market trend and the development in dairy industry. Strategy of the dairy queen is to provide UHT milk for those whom cannot afford high price milk and capture the share of the market. Dairy queen milk has no competitor in terms of actual condition of the packaging and price. So, we can say that there is no strategic group of dairy queen milk. It is unique product available in the market with its low price positioning. Government polices makes it easy to enter in this market but technology, availability of raw milk, and process makes it difficult for the up coming companies in this industry. Although, middle and lower class is the target market of the dairy queen but its quality and packaging attract the upper class as well. UHT treated milk is dependent on the production of the healthy animals and availability of raw milk. As the competition is concerned, there are many companies in the particular industry and they are competing with each other with price, positioning, packaging and availability. This is time of advertising because when customer knows about your product then he will be welling to purchase that product. Haleeb Foods Limited has hired Red Communication Arts as their new advertising agency which will be handling the following accounts: 1. BEVERAGES: Haleeb Good Day, Haleeb Funday, Tropico, Tropico Nectar, Candia, Candy Up, Haleeb Labban 2. Corporate account. Now, mostly companies are using these tools to promote their products and image as well. Total share of packed milk is 4% and 96% is for loss milk. Turnover of Haleeb is 9. 2 billon. Haleeb Rashmi is also providing profit to the company because this is low cost product and it has its own packaging. Itââ¬â¢s daily sale is 11000 litter per day. As market share is concern, Haleeb got 44% last year, Nestle 43%, Good Milk 4. 5% and Norpur 10% last year. So, Competitor of Haleeb is Nestle because there nick to nick competition. Nestle has long rang product line as compare to Haleeb. When we talk about the gaps there is a gap in the implementation gap in strategies. Availability gape and awareness gape is still there and now company is going to eliminate these gapes. As we know that industry growth rate is 25% in the dairy industry. Now, the companyââ¬â¢s focus is on the gross profit and company is doing the things to increase the gross profit. The cities which are very important in terms of sale share are Multan, Sahiwal, Fasil Abad, Gujranwala, and Rawalpindi. These cities are providing 60% to 70% sales of Haleeb. There are some problem from the customer side and distributor side. Dairy Queen has fino packaging and its shape is not convenient for the customer. It has three lair packaging so, leakage problem is from the distributor side. Now, the best strategy is penetration in maximum household and increase the awareness of the brand. This will be possible through activities and promotions. Tactical advertising will be best for the promotional activities of the Dairy Queen. ENVIRONMENT OF DAIRY INDUSTRY INTRODUCTION Dairy farming is an agro-based activity, buffaloes and cows can be raised for milk production in an organized manner for commercial purpose. For this project, animals can be purchased from the animal markets or breeders in Sahiwal, Sheikhupura, Faisalabad. More than 70 percent farmers hold less than 5 acres of land. Dairy farming may prove a profitable business for small landholders. They can also grow fodder on their land to feed dairy animals, without disturbing the main crop. Dairy farming is one of the best projects if professionally done on small land holdings. The return of the land used for feeding animals is higher as compared to land used for traditional cropping. The economical size of the herd is 50 animals, which will grow into 180 animals within a few years. Cows are also proposed in the herd, as they are high yields and efficient converters of feed into milk. This herd would consist of 75 percent buffaloes and 25 percent cows. A cow, on average, yields 14 litters milk a day over a lactation period of 305 days whereas the buffalo, on an average, yields 10 litters a day over a lactation period of 280 days. Pakistan is the fifth largest milk producer in the world. Milk production is 28 million tonnes from 125 million heads. Milk is used for drinking, tea, desi ghee, yogurt and butter making. Milk is also used to make Khoya and different types of sweets. Milk processing companies use milk as a raw material to formulate different types of milk for example pasteurized milk, UHT milk, condensed milk, skimmed milk, milk powder, etc. Different value added products like yogurt, ice cream, butter and cheese are also produced from the raw milk. The daily consumption of milk in Lahore is 2 to 3 million litters and that of Karachi is 4 million litters. The demand for processed milk has increased its share in quality conscious consumers. During the last two decades, processed milk has achieved 4 percent share in the milk market of Lahore, which is growing to about 4. 5 percent per annum. Therefore, metropolitan cities are the major markets for the sale of milk. With the every passing day, dairy products are becoming costlier because live stock farming has not scientifically grown with the increase in population and also it did not match with the pace of urbanization. Recently, milk prices in Karachi increased without any reason. In a short time of two years, milk prices have gone up from Rs 20 per liter to Rs 25, showing a 25 percent increase. Moreover, meat prices have also risen to about 25 percent in the last six months. In such a situation, the only way to control prices is to develop the dairy industry on scientific lines, which will not only provide meat and milk in abundant quantities to the domestic consumers but extra quantities can also be exported. In spite of having a large population of livestock, the country is spending some $40 million annually on the import of formula milk only, which is the highest amount spent by any country in the world on this particular commodity. Currently, there are some 160 varieties of infant formula milk available in the markets. ââ¬Å"The milk processing companies have reduced supply of their tetra pack milk products in the domestic market for last couple of weeks in an apparent bid to increase the prices of processed milk on the pretext of short supply. According to market sources, milk-processing companies working in formal sector including Nestle, Haleeb, Dairy Queen, Pakola, Olper, and Good Milk had increased prices of their milk products on September 15, 2005 from Rs34 per litter to Rs35 per kg. Later on, these companies raised processed milk rates on February 6, 2006 from Rs35 to Rs36 per litter in retail market. ââ¬Å"It was the second consecutive upward revision in prices by these companies in a short span of four months,â⬠General Secretary Karachi Retail Grocersââ¬â¢ Group Fareed Qureshi told The News. ââ¬Å"There is no autonomous authority or effective institution in the country to protect rights of consumers and to check frequent and unjustified price hike of different commodities. Neither Monopoly Control Authority (MCA) now renamed as Competition Authority nor local governments took stringent measures against hoarders, adulterators and profiteers to safeguard the interest of consumers,â⬠a consumer said. Some three months back fresh milk sellers increased prices from Rs28 per litters to Rs30 per litter at retail and Rs26 to Rs28 per litter at wholesale level despite repeated warnings by the City District Government Karachi (CDGK), who fixed official rates of fresh milk at Rs26 at wholesale and Rs28 per litter at retail. A market source said in the past whenever these companies increased prices of their products they curtailed their supplies as a first step and then increased prices. Though Pakistan is the fifth largest milk producer in the world producing around 28 billion litres of milk annually, it is still importing milk powder and condensed milk. Out of total production only 5 percent milk is processed on hygienic lines whereas shelf life of the remaining 95 percent un-processed milk is very short and due to unavailability of proper storage facilities most of milk produced goes waste. Government has allocated around Rs230 million for development of dairy industry in fiscal budget 2006-07. The sector has been allowed duty free import of dairy and livestock-related machinery and equipment (not manufactured locally). Moreover dairy sector has been exempted from sales tax besides of withholding tax. In order to reduce the cost of packaging of dairy products, the duty on imports of raw materials and intermediary goods used in the manufacture of packaging material has been reduced to 5 percent. â⬠DAIRY INDUSTRY ISSUES ââ¬Å"LAHORE: Experts and representatives of leading players from private sector addressed various issues pertaining to dairy industry at a seminar on Dairy Farming for Profit here on Monday. The seminar was organized by the Pakistan Dairy Development Company, commonly known as Dairy Pakistan and Pakistan Initiative for Strategy Development and Competitiveness (PISDAC), a project for private sector development in Pakistan, funded by USAID. Speaking on the occasion, Anthony Christiansen, the CEO of Dairy Pakistan, said that Pakistan is the third largest producer of milk in the world with a total production of 32 billion liters of milk a year. This makes its value even higher than the combined value for wheat and cotton. To boost this vital sector, he added, a number of initiatives are underway, including milk collection and chilling projects, Joint Milk Collection Pilot Projects, research and capacity building and many more. He further said, We are also working on safety standards, dairy sector research work and strategy development by evaluating the significance of the sector in terms of contribution to GDP, employment and importance to serve as a vehicle to alleviate poverty especially among the rural population. He informed the audience that these initiatives were being taken in line with the recommendations of a Strategy Working Group (SWG), which was constituted by Federal Minister for Industries, Production and Special Initiatives, Jahangir Khan Tareen, to develop Diary Sector Development Strategy. Faisal Farooq, Chairman Dairy Pakistan, highlighting various milk-marketing options, said that to improve the dairy sector, we are emphasising on close coordination with key stakeholders across the dairy value chain as well as with partners from educational institutions, government and private sector. The Head of Agriculture Wing, Bank of Punjab, Moazzam Maneka briefed the participants on the financing tools and options available for the dairy and agriculture sector. The dairy farming experts and representatives of many leading players from private sectors also spoke on the occasion and discussed at length the issues related to the dairy industry including, milk marketing options and potential for dairy farming on a larger scale. Dr M Ashraf from Nestle Pakistan enlightened the audience on issues relating to animal health, farm layouts and shed designs and other speakers emphasised that dairy farming could be very profitable if full attention was paid to important factors such as employment of skilled farm management, high quality feed and breeding cows with high production capabilities. The seminar ended at a positive note with high hopes for the development and growth of the Pakistanââ¬â¢s dairy sector. â⬠INDUSTRY DEFINITION BROAD DEFINITION When we look into milk industry as a broad definition, this industry operates in a fashion where raw milk is distributed in two main streams. ? Open ? Packaged This open milk is further distributed and transferred to different areas, which include the same area of production, households, urban and rural areas. Packaged milk is further processed through different types of processing techniques to produce different categories of packaged milk that will be categorized and defined in our narrow definition of milk industry. NARROW DEFINITION. Focusing towards our main industry and closing down our definition more narrow, we see that packaged milk being broken down to different categories starting from UHT milk, pasteurized milk, poly-pack milk, bottled milk, etc. Therefore, the industry which we have taken in narrow definition is packed UHT milk. UHT means Ultra Heat Treatment. In this process the milk passes through 140 degree centigrade in 3 seconds and then immediately cooled to 20 degree centigrade in the next 5 seconds, which in turn kills all the bacteria. This is the most sophisticated and advanced process in the world. At Haleeb Foods Limited we use the indirect method of UHT meaning that milk is heated by steam passing through stainless steel pipes outside milk. All other brands in Pakistan use the direct method of heating that is by injecting steam in the milk, this adds water content in the milk, where as indirect heating in fact evaporates water from the milk. PRODUCT COMPONENT MODEL CORE The core product or benefit is milk associating energy and health for all ages of people, men and women. BASIC Basic product is something that is sterilized and pure to use, so we can say that UHT treated milk is a basic form of our core product. As its containing the factor of purity and safe ingredients with preserved milk quality and features. AUGMENTED UHT milk is now coming with different flavors for the kids, then it has also been augmented through different packaging that are being used by different companies, trying to get potential out of UHT milk market. PEST ANALYSIS POLITICAL Dairy Sector in the Policy Context: ââ¬Å"The planners in Pakistan have always been more concerned about development of the crop sector than dairying in the agriculture economy of the country. After in dependence, the livestock population in Pakistan significantly deteriorated due to good stock was taken away by evacuees, indiscriminate slaughter of animals by incoming refugees, dry cows and buffaloes brought from rural areas by milk dealers for supply of milk in urban areas were slaughtered at the end of lactation period, and increased demand for meat due to growth of population and incomes. Urban areas faced acute shortage of milk and dairy products. The planners faced a policy dilemma of how to increase draught power and milk production simultaneously. Efforts were made to improve stock of cattle by breeding of indigenous animals, but output of improved stocks was inadequate to make a dent on the dwindling supplies of improved cattle and buffaloes in the country. The First Five Year Plan (1955-60) recognizes the importance of improving breeding centers, operating more hospitals, dispensaries and mobile dispensaries to check spread of contagious diseases for animals, in addition to providing for research on increasing supplies of feeds and fodders, and starting pilot schemes for artificial insemination for improvement of cattle [Government of Pakistan (1957)]. The First Plan was very specific in removing gujar (a cast of milkmen) colonies from cities like Lahore to outskirts and in recommending milk supply schemes for Karachi and Lahore on a pilot basis. Under the scheme government was to buy milk from gawalas (milkmen) residing in gujar colonies and supply pasteurized milk in sealed bottles through registered milk depots. To reduce adulteration in milk, the Plan recommended testing of milk for purity. The Plan also suggested that most of the milk would be produced in villages near the cities where small farmers would specialize in dairying by keeping half dozen or more cows, produce their own feed and organize them selves in to cooperatives for assembling, transport and even processing of milk. Soon it became clear that the First Plan, which articulated the problems at hand quite well proved to be too ambitious in their implementation as compared to the Plan target. The question of how to improve milk production capacity remained un-addressed even in the Second Five Year Plan (1960-65), which experien.

Drug War :: essays research papers
Drug War or Hypocritical Policies As of April 21, 2005, the U.S has spent $6,193,703,704 Federal dollars and $9,507,335,186 State dollars1on the ââ¬Å"Drug Warâ⬠in America. Has all of this money gone to waste or are we fighting the inevitable. I say the inevitable. We as Americans donââ¬â¢t want the governments side of EVERYTHING we have a say in what goes on in this country, donââ¬â¢t we? If this is so why then is this occurring: ââ¬Å"In 2000 it was discovered that the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy used financial incentives to get newspapers and magazines to editorialize in favor of the drug war and get TV and movie producers to change their scripts to reflect pro-drug war views. Court records show that Members of Congress created the federal governmentââ¬â¢s first anti-drug advertising campaign in 1998 as a way of using billions of taxpayer dollars to influence voters to reject state medical marijuana ballot measures.â⬠2 These people who claim to be trying to help America with the ââ¬Å"Drug Warâ⬠problem, are scribes and Pharisees as quoted from the Bible ââ¬Å"But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.â⬠3 As Chris Rock said on the movie Head of State, ââ¬Å"How can you fight a war on drugs if you never smoked the chronic?â⬠These people donââ¬â¢t understand how their choices because of their social rankings affect our teen age. We donââ¬â¢t have the resources to get the drugs that others may be able to obtain. Especially the lower- class people who have limited means so of course they are wanting the cheaper drugs, such as cocaine or heroine.

Bohemian Rhapsody Lyrics Meaning
Wow. I had no idea there were so many interpretations of this song. For me it's always been clear: the song is about an execution. Please bear with me as I construct a detailed argument for this interpretation. Here's the set-up (all of this is proven later): The narrator has committed murder. He might have done this out of malice, or self-defense, or anything in between; we don't know. The fact is that he killed someone, was caught and sentenced, and is now on Death Row. The man is not an important person, so to speak. He is not famous, nor rich, nor anything of the kind.He has no high-priced lawyers and no ââ¬Å"connectionsâ⬠to help him in his plight. The narrator implies that, if he had higher social status, if he had money or fame or whatever, then he would stand a good chance of escaping death. But alas, he is merely a ââ¬Å"poor boyâ⬠(aka ordinary person), and has no such power. His family and friends are attending the execution (or have otherwise heard about it), and are very distressed. Conversely, the family and friends of the dead man want revenge and they can't wait to see the narrator executed. The song takes place just prior to the execution, and involves the narrator talking to (or perhaps just thinking about) his mother, just before he dies. If you're still reading, you have my thanks. Here's the line-by-line analysis: *We start with the narrator's thoughts: ââ¬Å"Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? â⬠*The narrator is overwhelmed by the idea that he's going to die. He almost wonders whether this is all a nightmare or something. ââ¬Å"Caught in a landslide, No escape from realityâ⬠Again, he feels overwhelmed, but he can't really deny that he's about to be killed. Open your eyes, Look up to the skies and see,â⬠Looking up to heaven, wondering about life etc. ââ¬Å"I'm just a poor boy, I need no sympathy Because I'm easy come, easy go, Little high, little lowâ⬠Here he is quoting the common perspective: he's just a poor man (ââ¬Å"boyâ⬠), and he doesn't deserve sympathy. Much of the song is about how no one seems to care for the narrator, even though he seems mournful and regretful for his actions. ââ¬Å"Any way the wind blows doesn't really matter to me, to meâ⬠Now that he's going to die, nothing more matters. He has no future, no hopes or dreams or goals. He's going to die within the hour, and there's nothing he can do about it. He feels very hopeless, and from his perspective nothing really matters. ââ¬Å"Mama, just killed a man, Put a gun against his head Pulled my trigger, now he's deadâ⬠This part is obvious. He committed murder. I don't he's confessing to his mother here, as surely she would already know by the time of the execution. I think that he's really just sadly reflecting on what he's done, and he mentions this to his mother (or perhaps he's just thinking about her) ââ¬Å"Mama, life had just begunBut now I've gone and thrown it all awayâ⬠He was a young man, in his 20s perhaps. He had the chance to live a meaningful life, but instead he killed a man, thus causing his own death via execution. The narrator laments, noting that he could have saved his own life by choosing not to murder. But now the deed is done, and the narrator will face justice. ââ¬Å"Mama, ooh, Didn't mean to make you cry If I'm not back again this time tomorrow carry on, carry on as if nothing really mattersâ⬠Again he's sorry for his actions, and regrets that his mother now weeps for him, as he will soon be killed. The execution will take place within the hour, so if he's not back again this time tomorrow, it will mean that the execution happened on schedule, that he failed to escape it via pardon or other means. The narrator tells his mother that, even if he dies, she should carry on living, almost as if his death didn't matter to her. ââ¬Å"Too late, my time has comeâ⬠The execution is imminent. ââ¬Å"Sends shivers down my spine, body's aching all the timeâ⬠These are symptoms of his intense fear. ââ¬Å"Goodbye, ev'rybody, I've got to goâ⬠He says a final farewell to his family and friends. Gotta leave you all behind and face the truthâ⬠The truth is that he killed a man, and now he faces strict justice. He will die. ââ¬Å"Mama, ooh, I don't want to die I sometimes wish I'd never been born at allâ⬠This much is obvious. He doesn't want to be killed, and indeed he wonders if it would have been better never to have been born in the first place. A new voice starts singing; this voice represents his friends and family who are (or have been previously) protesting his execution. ââ¬Å"I see a little silhouetto of a manâ⬠The narrator seems so poor and pitiful, ââ¬Å"a shadow of what he once wasâ⬠, so to speak Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandangoâ⬠Honestly, I don't know what this means ââ¬Å"Thunderbolt and lightning, very, very fright'ning meâ⬠Both he and them are afraid that he'll be killed. The ââ¬Å"lightingâ⬠part might indicate that he's to be killed with the electric chair, or it might just be symbolic. ââ¬Å"(Galileo. ) Galileo. (Galileo. ) Galileo, Galileo figaroâ⬠Galileo was unfairly persecuted by the authorities of his time. Granted, Galileo didn't commit murder, but the narrator's advocates still draw a parallel, insisting that he doesn't deserve the punishment he's receiving. ââ¬Å"Magnifico.I'm just a poor boy and nobody loves meâ⬠The narrator repeats the common belief. ââ¬Å"He's just a poor boy from a poor family Spare him his life from this monstrosityâ⬠His friends and family argue that, because he's a poor boy, he deserves sympathy and compassion, not death. ââ¬Å"Easy come, easy go, will you let me goâ⬠Here the narrator pleads for his life. He basically says ââ¬Å"You don't seem to care about me; I'm ââ¬Ëeasy come, easy go'. You don't really care if I live or die. So, if you don't re ally care whether I live or die, can't you just let me live? Can't you grant me a pardon or something? ââ¬Å"Then the opposite group, the friends and family of the dead man (and/or the execution authorities) respond to these pleas. ââ¬Å"Bismillah! No, we will not let you goâ⬠The other group wants the narrator to be executed. ââ¬Å"(Let him go! ) Bismillah! We will not let you go (Let him go! ) Bismillah! We will not let you go (Let me go. ) Will not let you go (Let me go. ) Will not let you go. (Let me go. ) Ah No, no, no, no, no, no, no. â⬠The two groups have a spirited argument. ââ¬Å"(Oh mama mia, mama mia. ) Mama mia, let me goâ⬠Here the chorus of friends and family says ââ¬Å"let me goâ⬠, but I really think they mean ââ¬Å"let him go.Don't kill the narratorâ⬠ââ¬Å"Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for meâ⬠Beelzebub means Satan. The narrator feels (or speculates) that Satan is out to torment him by leading him to such a sa d fate. After all, it was probably a devil that tempted him to commit murder in the first place. Likewise, his family feels Satan is tormenting them as well, by killing the narrator to make them feel sad. Perhaps even the dead man's family joins in on this chorus; they feel that it was Satan who told the narrator to commit murder in the first place, and now they insist that execution is the only holy esponse to such a sin. Throughout this, the narrator has been lethargic and morose. But right before the end, he has a sudden burst of passion. ââ¬Å"So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye? So you think you can love me and leave me to die? Oh, baby, can't do this to me, baby Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here! â⬠I'm not sure if he's talking to anyone specific here, or if he's just ranting with passion, screaming at everyone and everything involved. As I imagine it, the narrator throws off his guards and fights to escape from his shackles. In the ensuing musical piece, he struggles with the executioners, knocking the room into disarray. The two families watch closely, but everyone knows it's a useless struggle; there's simply no way for the narrator to escape. And the end of the musical piece, he is beaten down and finally subdued. Once again he become morose and dispirited, and the executioners drag him to his place of death (electric chair, perhaps). In his last few moments before death, the narrator resumes his previous state of mind. Nothing really matters, Anyone can see Nothing really matters Nothing really matters to meâ⬠Again, because he's about to die, nothing really matters to him. He has no purpose, no hope, nothing. ââ¬Å"Any way the wind blowsâ⬠¦ â⬠This is an allusion to the begining of the song, where this image was used along with ââ¬Å"nothing really mattersâ⬠Soâ⬠¦ yeah. I think that's a pretty thorough interpretation. Bohemian Rhapsody is about a remorseful murderer as he's about to be ex ecuted. Questions? Comments? Did anybody even read all that?

The Impact of Downsizing on Human Resource Management
The Impact of Downsizing on Human Resource Management The workplace is constantly changing each day and the job of the Human Resource Manager is constantly changing to keep up with these changes. It is important for the Human Resource Manager to stay attuned to the various changes and make sure the corporation is productive during the changes as this can affect the profits and profitability of the company. One of the major problems in the workforce today is downsizing and the impact that downsizing has on Human Resource Managers and the programs they must implement and communicate to the employees of the corporation and follow any legal requirements that are in place at the time of the downsizing. The Human Resource Manager must makeâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This can cause problems for Human Resource Managers because they now have an employee of force of less experienced people. Another form of downsizing is Early Retirement Incentives which lets the employee pick a date in the future to retire and earn a sizable amount more in retirement benefits. This plan has several drawbacks, which includes costing the company more money when they are trying to cut costs and leaves the company with the same problem of employees with less experience. This plan should be a last resort alternative due to the high cost of the plan and the fact that the date is in the future which could affect profitability if the market changes. If the market improves, the company can now keep the worker but still has to pay out the larger amount of the retirement benefits. Another downsizing plan available to Human Resource Managers is the compulsory termination, which means the employer lays the employee off without any benefits or severance package at all. This hurts the employee and this normally happens when a plant closes or job elimination of departments or divisions within the company. This plan is not the best plan but happens when there are factors that are beyond the control of a company. Leadership Is A Crucial Part Of Life - 898 Words
Leadership is a crucial part of life. Without leaders the world would probably fall apart. People need leaders to follow and to set an example for them. Leaders step up and stand up for what they believe in. They can be men or women and even children. Leaders can be found in every country, state, and city. They are located around the world, but not all leaders are good, effective leaders. There are leaders that abuse their power. However, there are also selfless leaders who truly make an impact on lives. A huge example of a selfless leader is Mahatma Gandhi. He was born in 1869 on October 2nd in North West India. After college, he took a job in South Africa but later moved back to India. Upon his return, the most influential period of his life started. He started non-violent civil disobedience and began to encourage the locals to improve their circumstances. Gandhi did a lot of awesome things during his lifetime. The things he did can still be used as lessons today. He encouraged peo ple to fight for their freedom. (Mahatma Gandhi 2013) I use fight very lightly though, because he was a non-violent person. He was a role model for many other famous leaders including Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr. One of the biggest reasons why I admire him is because he was so humble. He did not think of himself as a good leader. He was just doing him job as a decent human being. Buddhism Vs Hinduism Hinduism - 1773 Words
Taylor Winchester HST 203- 05 Taylor Winchester Professor Warber HST 203 October 24, 2015 Buddhism vs. Hinduism According to the book, The Religion of the Hindus, Hinduism is the third oldest world religion that has approximately 300 million followers, most of which live in India. The holy language of Hinduism is the Sanskrit language. Hinduism is considered a religion versus a philosophy. There is no specific founder for Hinduism; however, it is closely related the customs and manner of Hindus, making it rather challenging to distinguish its essential properties from mythology and folklore. (Morgan, 3) Hinduism by Axel Michaels states that the term ââ¬Å"Hinduâ⬠originated from the Persians whom were living on the Indus River; The Indus Valley contained over 40,000 residentsââ¬â¢ irrigation systems, houses and fortress of barred shaped bricks as well as paved streets (Michaels, 31). Here is where non-Muslim population began using the word ââ¬Å"Hinduâ⬠. Europeans followed up with this practice. One is considered a Hindu once he or she is born in India and behaves like an Hindu if one does not publicly identify oneself as a Christian or a Muslim. Thus explaining why converting to Hinduism is not possible, especially due to the polygamy of the Muslims and constant depletion of Hinduism is forecast (Michaels, 14). Alternative Cinema Essay Example For Students
Alternative Cinema Essay The term alternative cinema has certain connotations. To many, it is notalternative, instead it is the way cinema was meant to be viewed, in that theviewer should be able to define the film in their own personal terms. In thefollowing essay, I will firstly examine what the term alternative cinema means, and secondly how Brechts theories are evident in many elements of the filmsthat have been pigeon-holed as alternative cinema. The word alternative isdescribed in Collins English Dictionary as: Denoting a lifestyle, culture, art form, etc., regarded by its adherents as preferable to that of contemporarysociety because it is less conventional, materialistic, or institutionalised, and, often, more in harmony with nature.(Makin, 1992) This is an extremelyuseful definition, as the word ?alternative has been used to describe aform of medicine or therapy, and even forms of energy. ?Alternativemedicine examines the persons physical well-being, and uses acupuncture,feng-shui, massage, and many ot hers, as techniques to alleviate disease. ?Alternative energy is energy created from what surrounds us, such as,wind, the sea and the tides; it is energy that brings us in alignment withnature. The word ?alternative in these forms looks at natural processesfound in nature. A number of films from around the world can be pigeon-holed asalternative cinema, that is, the cinema that rejects the mainstream approach offilmmaking. It is not a particular method of making films because many of thesefilms are very different from each other and use differing approaches. alternative cinema does not look at a particular way of doing things but aparticular way of not doing things. the Brechtian aspect of making films centreslargely on the theoretical and creative side of film-making, therefore, many ofthe films said to be alternative, in terms of production, cannot be discussed interms of the work of Bertolt Brecht. Bertolt Brecht was born in Germany in 1898,and has been cited as the driving force behind what is commonly known as the?epic theatre. Brechts ethos centred around bourgeoise theatre, whichthrough the elaborate sets and acting style helped to allow the audience toconsider what they are seeing, rather than a simple attempt to create reality. The bourgoise theatre did this by presenting storylines and characters that theaudience could empathise with and not presenting a simple construction ofreality. The audience were pushed to evaluate the piece and no longer treated itas simple entertainment. I once stood, with a friend, in front of a painting bythe Italian painter, Gustave Cailebotte. The painting was called ?Paris: On ARainy Day, and to me the paintings use of drab colours and suffused light, plus the details of Cailebottes characters, distinct in the foreground yetblurred in the background, gave me a sense that I was a Parisian walking throughthose streets. I could not focus on what lay beyond, and was justsingle-mindedly getting to where I was going. The rain had turned Paris into acity that conflicts with the Paris that we all know, a Paris that welcomes youwith open-arms, a friendly Paris full of sunshine. This to me was theanti-Paris. In short, my belief was that Cailebotte was attempting to expressthe wonder of P aris through challenging what Paris is not. My friend on theother hand believed that Cailebotte was destroying the notion of Paris as a citywhere the sun always shines, where the scenery is beautiful and the streets arefull of friendly faces. This to him was the back-end of Paris, where the localsnever wore smiles and walked about their daily business unaware of how the otherhalf lived. This to him was the real Paris. This incident perfectly illustratesthe essence of alternative cinema, enabling the consumer to personally interpretthe film. It should be possible for two people to walk out of the film withtotally differing views on what they have just seen. It is up to the audience tounravel the film, not the film to unravel itself. Brecht himself remarked thatEpic Theatre: turns the spectator into an observer, but arouses his capacityfor action, forces him to take decisions the spectator stands outside, studies. (Brcht, 64) When the Hollywood studio system started in the 1920s,certai n techniques and standardised operations grew from this. Up until thispoint most film-making was said to be experimental. However, with the advent ofthe major five studios (Paramount, MGM, RKO, Warner, Fox) and the minor threestudios (Universal, United Artists, Columbia), a divide between what can beclassed as ?alternative and what can be classed as ?mainstream cinemaappeared. There was an ?assembly line technique of production within thefully integrated studios and their sole aim was economical rather than artistic. Mass production was the vogue. Henry Ford made cars for the masses the studiosmade films for the masses. The studios tried to open a fictional world and dragthe audience inside by hiding the technical side of film-making. They wouldobide by specific rules of operation, such as the 180? rule (A line is drawnthrough the action in which the camera cannot cross, thus keeping the rightperspective on the action) and the 30? rule (The camera cannot cut to more thanthirty degrees around the axis of an object), to name just a few. Temporalcontinuity kept the story flowing in the right direction, and all thesetechniques helped the audience to be totally absorbed in the action on screenand to believe in the fictional narrative. In contrast to this, it was Jean-LucGoddard who remarked that his films are more essayistic lessnarrative than ever before, have become a continuous free-form commentaryon art, society, memory and, above all, cinema. (Romney, J) This way ofthinking was largely foreign to Hollywood and the mainstream film-makers, andthis quote typifies the ethos of the alternative film-makers. To exemplify themethods of the mainstream filmmakers versus the alternative filmmakers we cansimply look at the film, Cape Fear. The 1962 version of this film by J. LeeThompson works on the Hollywood ethos of equilibrium. The sugar coated portrayalof family life, is soon followed by the disequilibrium caused by the entry ofMax Cady and then the film ends with the equilibrium that returns when Cadydies. In the 1991 version, Martin Scorsese, its director, who although notgenerally classed as an alternative filmmaker, is classed as an auteur in thathis films are personal journeys, and express personal beliefs. His version ofCape Fear begins with a family already in disequilibrium and the entry of Cadyexacerbates this. Cady eventually dies and an equilibrium is found that was notevident at the beginning. The film of Scorsese can be seen as working in themainstream because of th e happy ending but still does not follow standardisednarrative procedure. This method of working is indicative of the modernfilm-makers move away from what is generally thought of as mainstream, andinstead illustrates a newly realised technique of storytelling. Peter Wollenremarks that The beginning of the film starts with establishment, which setsup the basic dramatic situation usually an equilibrium, which is thendisturbed. A kind of chain reaction then follows, until at the end a newequilibrium is restored. (Wollen, 99). Scorseses Cape Fear does appear tohave an economic purpose above everything else and closure gives the mainstreamfilm its own reality, with nothing existing ouside its own bounds, and no needto reach ouside this perimeter to find closure. Mostly, Mainstream cinema isfictional entertainment and its aim is to be unchallenging and above allenjoyable, with social and political issues largely ignored and evenbiographical and true-life films presented as simple repres entations, all thisdiffers from what the documentary film and alternative cinema is trying toachieve. The acting style withing the Brechtian film should have an?alienating effect on the audience. The actors would use various techniquesto seperate themselves from the characters they were playing. Lines weredelivered as if simply quoting from the script, which had the effect ofseperating the actor from the part they were playing. It would disregard the 4thwall of the theatre and address the audience directly. I will now look at Germanexpressionism (commonly cited as alternative cinema) and in particular RobertWienes Cabinet of Dr Caligari. This film displays many elements of Brechtiantheory, with its distorted view of reality. One reviewer started his critiqueby saying: Is the film what it is on the surface? Is Francis a madman who hasconcocted the story? Or is it yet again reversed, with the framing device anepilogue which illustrates how corrupt power protects itself? or, again, can anypart of the story be believed? Could some aspects be true and others false? Books: A Long Way Gone and The Bite of the Mango example EssayIn short, each period of history has its own beliefs and values inapplicable toany other, so that nothing can be understood independently of its historicalcontext; Brecht called this ?Historicization. In Not Reconciled, thenarrative flits around between differing time periods and does not clearlyseperate each period from the next, therefore, alienating the audience from theevents on screen. The actors in Not Reconciled spout their lines as if recitersof written dialogue. Through this the audience, become aware of the expectationsof film acting and then they broaden these expectations which again helps toalienate them. Brecht only briefly toyed with the film industry, making the leftwing communist picture Kuhle Wampe, yet his theories were applied liberally bythe French New-Wave cinema and can be seen as early as German Expressionism. TheGerman New-Wave cinema of the 1960s also displayed many of BertholtBrechts theories, with directors such as Alexander Kluge displaying theseideas in films such as Disorientated. The film Disorientated was typified byepisodic narrative, alienating acting and the seperation of sound and image. alternative cinema is not just a term used to describe French, German and Sovietcinema, although these were simply the countries most renowned for this type ofproduction. Countries such as Brazil, Iran, India and Britain have all producedfilms classed as alternative or new-wave. The Brechtian philosophy, if used inthe production of film, will nearly always get the film the title of alternativecinema because the concepts of pleasure, spectacle and identification all take abackseat whilst the differing concepts of alienation, sporadic and episodicnarrative take the front seat and help the audience to understand the film onmany differing levels. Many barriers have been broken down in recent years withdirectors such as Quentin Tarantino offering Jean-Luc Goddard as a majorinfluence in his work. Yet he is still classed as Mainstream because his filmsgain high box-office receipts, although, at the same time, garnering ?cultstatus. The film-makers that emerged through the seventies, for exa mple StanleyKubrick, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Copolla and Arthur Penn, all displayedprominent anti-Hollywood threads. Yet their box-office returns proved that theso-called Hollywood rules of production set up in the studio years, can beignored and a specific effect achieved. These directors were great innovatorsyet still gained huge box-office returns, which forged the alliance between thealternative and the mainstream. Hollywood is still concerned with the economicside of film-making yet it has been shown to be possible to innovate and alsoside with the mainstream movement.
